A simple, handsome bureau bookcase of walnut with broken dome top, the whole walnut & herringbone veneered. English, c.1740, George II period. Solid Virginia walnut upper case secondary wood. Oak secondary for drawers. The mirrored doors (1 plate replaced) reveal conforming drawers. The slant reveals a well, 8 drawers (+2 secret drawers) arranged in a stepped design. Original iron fall metalwork. Hardware replaced multiple times. Feet, base moldings, and candle slide facings replaced about 1780 when the pediment was altered- typical changes to update a piece in the 18th century to keep up with interior design trends. 39 1/2"w. 22 3/8"d. 86 1/2"h.
