Large landscape by Harry Pennell, signed lower left, (British, 1879-1934), oil on canvas: "Evening on the River". The river bends towards a distant village. Signature includes ARCA indicating Associate of Royal Cambrian Society where he showed 7 paintings in 1899. Equally interesting is the likelihood that Harry Pennell was also John House Hooper, 1851-1906, exhibiting 1885-99 at the Walker Royal Academy, Royal Hibernian, etc. The signatures & styles are identical; a plaque on a painting from the Omell Gallery, London states "John Horace Hooper, called Harry Pennell".
Frame: 40 1/2" w., 30 1/2" h., 4 1/4" d.
